Which pacing strategy should you use?
Negative split is the recommended strategy for most rowers. Starting conservatively preserves your anaerobic capacity for the final 500m, where most races are won or lost. Aim to make each 500m slightly faster than the last.
Even split is the simplest approach and works well if you know your capabilities precisely. The risk is that starting too fast feels “even” but leads to a fade.
Fly and die means going out hard and hoping to hold on. It feels fast initially but almost always produces a slower overall time. Avoid this unless you're very experienced at managing the pain.
