How split, time, and distance relate
Split is the time it takes to row 500 meters at your current pace. It is the standard unit shown on the Concept2 PM5 monitor and the most common way rowers describe intensity. A 2:00.0 split means you cover 500 meters every two minutes, which equals 250 meters per minute.
The three values are connected by a simple ratio: split = (time / distance) x 500. If you know any two, you can solve for the third. This calculator handles the arithmetic so you can focus on planning your workout.
Watts are calculated from split using the Concept2 power formula: watts = 2.80 / (split/500)^3. Because of the cubic relationship, small changes in split produce large changes in power. Dropping from a 2:00 to a 1:55 split increases watts by roughly 13%.
